Aces Course Descriptions

ACT Prep
Course Objective:

Prepare students for the ACT exam. The course will offer various test taking techniques and several actual full length exams for practice.

Overview:

This course is for students that will be taking the ACT exam during the upcoming school year. The course moves at a fairly rapid pace and homework is expected to be completed by students. Classes are held once per week, and students are required to attend every class session since each session will offer information that could increase their test scores. Students will take official previously administered exams so as to maximize the "feel" of the real test. All exams will be scored completely, and progress will be monitored.

Courses are one day per week (Saturday) during the fall spring and summer sessions.

Writing and Thinking
Course Objective:

This course aims to review concepts that are the foundation for building stronger confidence and capability in writing, particularly essays.

Overview:

Writing continues to take on an increasingly important role in both standardized tests and college admissions. Both the ACT and the SAT will adopt new writing components in 2005. Also, some universities are requiring additional essays as part of there admissions process. Students CANNOT get around writing essays like they once could. Thus it is imperative that they gain experience in expressing themselves and structuring their essays to WIN.

Special Notes:
  • Writing and Thinking is targeted for 10th grade students, though others may be allowed if there is space.
  • This course is offered in the fall and spring sessions.

Math Essentials
Course Objective:

This course aims to teach and review many of the basic concepts that are the foundation for building stronger confidence and capability in the mathematics and sciences.

Overview:

Many students lack the math fundamentals that are required to succeed at the high school level and beyond. This becomes evident when they achieve low scores on the Aces placement exam, which requires an understanding of core concepts and skills. These students need to take advantage of an opportunity to bring themselves to the level they want, and need to be. The Math Essentials course provides this opportunity by reviewing math concepts that range from arithmetic basics and percents to basic algebra and geometry. The classes are held once a week (Saturday), and the students are required to attend every class session. Homework will be given throughout the semester.

English Essentials
Course Objective:

This course aims to teach and review many of the core concepts that are the foundation for building stronger confidence and capability in the use of the English language in both written and verbal communication.

Overview:

Many students lack the foundation required to succeed in areas of both written and verbal communication (at the high school level and beyond). They are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to gain knowledge that will increase confidence and ability in writing papers, public speaking, and ultimately in the completion of the verbal and writing sections of standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT respectively. The English Essentials course provides this opportunity by reviewing core concepts that range from basic parts of speech to paragraph structure and proper punctuation.

High School Prep
Course Objective:

This course is designed to teach and strengthen the basic math and English skill sets of students that will enter high school in the fall. Students are expected to work very hard to make sure that they are able to take off running from the very start of their high school experience.

Overview:

Many students lack the math fundamentals that are required to succeed at the high school level and beyond. During this course, limited to 8th graders going into 9th grade, students will review many of the basic fundamental concepts of math and grammar. Classes are held once a week (Saturday), and students are required to attend every class session. Homework will be given throughout the semester.

  • This course is only open to students entering 9th grade in the fall.
  • This course is only offered in the summer session.

10th Grade Prep
Course Objective:

This course is designed to teach and strengthen students in the areas of Writing, Algebra and Geometry. It is intended for students entering the 10th grade in the fall. Students that have completed algebra in the 8th grade may be allowed to take the course. Students are expected to work very hard to make sure that they strengthen the Algebra that they took the previous year and learn many of the geometry and writing concepts needed to help ensure excellent achievement in the coming year.

Overview:

This course begins with two weeks of writing fundamentals. Students will learn and practice brainstorming and mapping their ideas, paragraph development and the difference between personal (college admission) and persuasive (ACT/SAT) essays. Many students do not master the very important concepts in Algebra during the 8th or 9th grade. This course includes a rigorous review of Algebra to address potential issues that students may have. After Algebra, students will also get a strong introduction to Geometry, including angle and line theory, triangles, ratios and proofs. The classes are held once a week (Saturday), and the students are required to attend every class session. Homework will be given throughout the semester.
